Greetings from West Ashburton

Ashburton Memorial Plaque.

Taking Time Out

Every day we are bombarded by the media with stories of doom and gloom. How many of us ever stop and take time out to read the plaques on our war memorial statues. Words so weathered by time they are hard to read. These are the words on the memorial statue in the park outside the Ashburton Council Chambers on West Street.

Memorial Memories

Behind this Plaque are rolls showing the names of the 97,335 members of New Zealand expeditionary force who embarked for service overseas during the great war 1914 - 18

Also

The names 104,988 members of the New Zealand expeditionary forces who served overseas during the Great war 1935 - 45.

Memorial Statue in Ashburton.

Ye
WHO PASS THIS WAY HOLD IN MEMORY OF THE MEN IN THE
ASHBURTON COUNTY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914 - 1918.

THEY WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE INSCRIBED, WERE AMONG THOSE WHO, AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY, LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER AND FINALLY PASSED FROM THE SIGHT OF MEN, BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING UP THEIR LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE FOR FREEDOM.

In the face of all that is troubling you today why don’t you go to Ashburton West Park. Look up at the tall monument and give a prayer of thanks to our war heroes and thank God for sparing you another day of life in your wonderful town called Ashburton.
